One of our new programs this year is called "Edot," and students spend the year learning about a variety of different diaspora communities / cultures of the Jewish people. The first unit of the year focuses on Ethiopian Jews and Ethiopian Jewish traditions, and our students spent time trying out a technique of Ethiopian Jewish basket weaving last Sunday... check out a few of the pictures!
Hi! These look great! We organize an Ethiopian Heritage camp in VA every year and I'd love to find out how you made these!

Hi Deedie,
DeleteI teach an after-school program at our synagogue's Religious School (Temple Isaiah in Lafayette, CA)so I have very little time. Here is the link for the basket weaving kits that I ordered. These are not Ethiopian baskets, of course, but I wanted the children in my class to experience simple basket-weaving techniques so they could appreciate the patience and skill that goes into creating them.If you decide to use these kits, one piece of advice - try to leave enough time for the baskets to be completed in one session. Since you have to wet the reeds before using them, they become moldy very quickly if they lie around waiting to be used again. Here is the link to the site where I found the kits. http://basketweaving.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page25.html?gclid=COW55qT75a8CFQ-Chwods0di0g
